Director, Production Services

OBJECTIVE
To ensure that all events/projects requiring custom fabrication or modified stock decor continue to be completed on time, on budget and with the high-quality results expected of our clients. Effectively manage the production department resources, materials and timelines.

GENERAL
The Director, Production Services will work collaboratively with the Sales, Creative Services, Project Management and Operations teams to review and plan for all upcoming projects (pending and confirmed) including but not limited to:
•Working with Sales & Creative to inform design choices and provide cost estimates in support of presenting Statements of Work to clients

  • Currently, the Director, Production Services is responsible for the drawing of all detailed construction drawings (we are a Vectorworks company), although this function may be better suited to a draftsperson moving forward.
  • Coordinating with the Warehouse Manager to ensure the warehouse team pull, inspect, repair, and prepare any stock scenery as needed

SHOP ORGANIZATION
An integral component of the Director, Production Services will be to ensure the fabrication shop and departments within it are organized and running efficiently. This includes but is not limited to:
•Empowering the production staff to ensure that the shop is well stocked with commonly used materials/ hardware and that all tools are in good working order

  • Reviewing and disseminating the project info to the fabrication team (carpentry, steel welding, paint, print, etc.)
  • Following and maintaining quality control standards and procedural guidelines by checking and signing off on all work completed by staff within the shop

Approving/ tracking of labor numbers and expense reports of the production staff

OVERHIRE STAFFING
The Director, Production Services is responsible for ensuring that all specialty areas are staffed accordingly based on the current workflow, this includes but is not limited to:
•Reviewing current and upcoming projects to identify any shortages in manpower and working to schedule crew accordingly
•Consistently leading by example, offering supportive management to all members of the team, empowering staff and helping to foster and work with co-workers in a friendly and productive work environment
•Negotiating and addressing staff challenges

Qualifications / Required Skills

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
•Minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in a Scenic Shop Manager or Director level position
•Experience in events, exhibits or film industry preferred but not mandatory
•Minimum education – Bachelor’s degree preferred
•Thorough knowledge of structural and mechanical construction including materials and techniques for scenic fabrication, steel fabrication and wood working concepts
•High functioning ability to use various computer aided drafting platforms, specifically Vectorworks 2021 and a working knowledge of CNC machinery and software
•Flexibility and adaptability to changing workloads with excellent organizational and time management skills and the capacity to establish priorities and work under pressure
•Ability to think critically, with strong problem-solving skills and a penchant for attention to details

Additional Information

HOURS
•Schedule is based on a 40–50-hour work week
•Shop hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm with evenings, weekends, and overtime on some projects as necessary. Working remotely is acceptable, based on shop schedule and workload.
•This position will primarily take place in our office/shop in Somerville, MA however there will be very rare occasions to work offsite at event job sites as defined by the event.

Salary: Starting rate is negotiable in the mid-$60K range based on experience. Competitive benefits including health, dental, life insurance, long-term disability insurance & 401(K). Directors are also eligible for semiannual bonuses based on individual & company performance.
